Mitsubishi has confirmed that its Lancer Evolution will bow out of the market after the 2015 model year, and at this point it’s not clear what will replace it. Mitsubishi has said in the past that any successor to the Evo will be very different to past generations of the car, with many suggesting it will be a hybrid. Unfortunately, it may be several years still until we see a proper successor launched, as Mitsubishi has also said it won’t start development of such a car until it has suitable technology.
As for the final 2015 Lancer Evolution, there aren’t many updates to report on. The side mirrors are now heated and feature integrated turn signals, while a new drop cup holder with lid has been installed in the cabin.
For the GSR, standard features still include a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, six-speaker stereo, leather sports steering wheel, hands-free and USB connectivity, 18-inch wheels and Brembo brakes. A five-speed manual also continues to be standard, while a new Premium Package is being offered and includes Mitsubishi’s Sight and Sound Package plus leather seating, power glass sunroof, heated front seats, sound dampening enhancement and piano-black accents on the dash.
Opting for the MR model sees the 2015 Lancer Evolution benefit from a number of additional features including a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system, xenon headlights, a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, Bilstein shocks with Eibach springs, two-piece brake rotors, and 18-inch BBS forged wheels.
No changes have been made to the powertrain, which means the car’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is still pumping out 291 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Drive still goes to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s unique Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel-drive system. The setup integrates a number of separate systems to aid handling, such as those controling yaw, a center differential, stability and anti-lock braking.
Pricing for the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is yet to be confirmed, but expect it to start close to the $35,820 sticker of the 2014 model.
It’s sad to see the Lancer Evolution finally bow out of the market, with all ten generations having brought plenty of fun and top-level performance to those on a budget. Having also won four straight World Rally Championship titles in the skillful hands of Tommi Mäkinen, the Lancer Evolution is arguably one of the most capable four-door sports cars of all time. Go out and get one while you still can.

der nächste Evo wird ein SUV

Mitsubishi Evo to be replaced with a high-performance hybrid SUV
Iconic sports saloon is dead as we know it, but its spirit will live on in a new hybrid model using tech from Mitsubishi's Pikes Peak racer.
The Mitsubishi Evo is dead as a sports saloon, company chiefs have confirmed to Autocar, but its spirit will live on as a high-peformance hybrid SUV.
Once the Japanese manufacturer’s most iconic model, the Evo and its future have been the subject of much internal debate for a number of years, with Mitsubishi putting a greater emphasis on hybrid vehicles.
Speaking at the Paris motor show, Mitsubishi product boss Kanenori Okamoto confirmed that an Evo XI was not part of the brand’s future plans.
“It will not exist as we know it,” he said. “It will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance.”
Okamoto explained that the company has yet to decide which the new rapid SUV would be based upon, although it will include technology inspired by Mitsubishi’s electric Pikes Peak hillclimb racer, know as MiEV Evolution.
Indeed, lessons learned in the packaging of the competition car could prove useful; an Evo-inspired hybrid SUV would require a large battery and high-output electric motor to produce performance car characteristics.
It will make use of the latest evolution of the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel-drive system originally developed for the Evo X and also integrated into the MiEV Evolution.
Okamoto added that components and control systems pioneered in the new high-performance SUV would trickle down into other future Mitsubishi road cars. He also said that the project would benefit and inspire the younger breed of engineers within the company.
UK performance car enthusiasts hold the Evo in high regard, notably because of its success in rallying, but there are no plans to take the SUV into motorsport.
However, Mitsubishi UK boss Lance Bradley was confident that green technology could excite on the road: “Green is still fun to drive. It’s a challenge to make it fun, but not a particularly difficult one. Electric vehicle performance is very good.”
Mitsubishi's entire range over the next five years will grow to include an electric or plug-in hybrid electric version, according to Bradley. Next year the firm will launch a new pick-up truck and in 2016 will launch a second generation version of the ASX crossover.
The company has been buoyed by the success of the Outlander PHEV, a driving force behind the firm's UK sales being up 93 per cent year-on-year so far, on top of 50 per cent growth in 2013.
This has been important, says Bradley, because the firm's future product plan is banking on the plug-in hybrid electric technology being a success.
"As new products are introduced, they will all get the new technology," he said. "Our technology is scalable. The ASX will be the next to get it in a different version, likely with a single electric motor and two-wheel drive. It won't have a shorter driving range, though, because battery technology is improving all the time."
The new ASX will be inspired by the design of a concept car from the Tokyo motor show, said Bradley. |

Hi ,

Mitsubishi will be bringing a new plug-in hybrid crossover concept to the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, which the automaker says hints at its future direction, both in terms of styling and technology. Apart from a pair of teaser images, the only information we have is that the concept will come with two-wheel drive, a plug-in hybrid setup and a crossover body.
Looking at the teasers, it’s clear the new concept is an evolution of the XR-PHEV concept that we first saw at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Like the XR-PHEV, the new concept for Geneva is likely a preview of the next-generation Outlander Sport.
Why the interest in a concept that likely previews a new Outlander Sport? Because Mitsubishi has also shown us a version of the previous XR-PHEV with the Evolution name tagged on, and this performance-oriented crossover concept, complete with S-AWC all-wheel drive, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and plug-in hybrid power, may just be a preview of the car that will eventually succeed the Lancer Evolution which bows out of the market this year.
We should have more details soon as the Geneva Motor Show will be getting underway on March 3. To see what else will be at the Swiss show, head to our dedicated hub.
In related news, Mitsubishi is expected to use February’s Chicago Auto Show to debut a new model, tipped to be a new generation of the Montero. Our sister site The Car Connection has more details. |
