wie einige ja schon immer dachten, kein Leistungsplus durch Turbo oder Kompressor, vielleicht ein paar Elektronik-PS, Hauptaugenmerk Federung und Handling

FR-S fans that want an open roof, taste the sad. Miata fans, taste the happy. The Toyota FT-86 Open Concept will not enter production. And neither will a high-powered turbo FR-S. The FT-86 Open was Toyota's vision of an open top 86/GT86/FR-S and it looked damn good. But there were a few issues. First, open top cars that aren't designed that way from the outset lose a lot of rigidity and gain oodles of weight. It seems the FR-S Convertible hit road blocks like that, as well as cost. It would be a low volume car and would then be too expensive. That means it would no longer compete with the Miata on price. And that means there would be no point to it. The cost problem also hit plans for a low volume turbo FR-S. We've driven the car a number of times and loved it as is, but the chassis is plenty capable of adding some horsepower and still being seriously awesome. Unfortunately, it seems the cost was too much to make the investment. |

Despite numerous reports of a hotter, STI-enhanced BRZ in the works, a top Subaru executive has confirmed that there are no plans for such a car at present. Instead, the Japanese automaker is focused on boosting sales of its mainstream models. "The focus has been on growing [Subaru] sales around the world," Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior told Motoring. "We are still reasonably small as a manufacturer and resources are limited and have to be targeted.” Senior explained that this meant there were no plans to launch any more STI models beyond the 2015 WRX STI, including the oft-rumored turbocharged BRZ. He did concede, however, that importers around the globe were still lobbying Subaru to build a hotter BRZ. Recently, a top Toyota official revealed that poor sales of the BRZ’s GT 86 twin (a Scion FR-S for American readers) meant additional variants of the Toyota, such as the much-hyped convertible and a possible performance version, were in doubt. This is also likely to have weighed on Subaru’s decision not to develop additional variants of the BRZ. Pictured above is Subaru’s BRZ tS (tuned by STI), which is essentially a version of the car fitted with performance upgrades from the automaker’s STI in-house tuner. The upgrades developed for the car mostly enhance its handling, and at present are not available in the U.S. market. |

Subaru wants to crowd out its third-party aftermarket tuning parts, sold as Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) at dealers, and get serious about letting customers bolt real STI components onto American Subarus. The Subaru STI Performance Concept is here to establish a beachhead in the minds of consumers before the coming STI invasion. But is it enough? "So it's a showcase of what STI can do. But what can it do? For one thing, it's not turbocharged. The concept car is packing a Super GT engine, most likely a race-modified, naturally-aspirated EJ20—the predecessor to the new FA20 that powers the production car. The rest of the bits bolted on this concept aren't disclosed, but STI claims that there are chassis, suspension, and (obviously) aero upgrades. "Read between the lines, and what we're looking at is Subaru of America's hope that they can produce special, tuned-from-the-factory models that feature lots of the STI parts you see on this concept, but without making significant changes to the driveline. If that sounds loosely like the "Tuned by STI" cars sold in Japan, badged as "tS" models, you're exactly right. "How will Subaru badge STI-fettled models in the U.S.? What additional cosmetic or interior accouterments could we expect? All open questions—questions we're hoping our friends at Subaru can answer at the New York auto show. Stay tuned for more |

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. UNVEILS STI PERFORMANCE CONCEPT AT 2015 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW • Concept showcases Subaru Tecnica International (STI) vehicle performance capabilities • Concept features enhancements for chassis, body, and air intake/exhaust systems • Concept’s engine is based on the racing engine from the Subaru BRZ Super GT race car New York, N.Y. - Subaru of America, Inc. today unveiled the STI Performance Concept at the New York International Auto Show. The STI Performance Concept signifies a plan for U.S.-expansion of Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the performance division of Subaru, in its three core business areas; aftermarket parts, STI-tuned cars and motorsports. The expansion has already begun, with STI-engineered parts replacing Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) aftermarket parts in the U.S. market, and with STI’s increasing engineering presence in Subaru of America’s Global RallyCross team. In the future, further models tuned by STI will be available in the US. These cars could feature more extensive modifications from the factory than previously offered, such as suspension, performance, braking, chassis and aerodynamic upgrades. “At STI we know from our racing that to win, it is important not only to have high power, but also that all aspects of performance are balanced over the whole car,” said Yoshio Hirakawa, president of Subaru Tecnica International, Inc. “When we achieve this balance, the driver feels that the car is easy to handle and reliable, and he can use it fully to the limits of its performance. Our plan is to produce cars and accessories that drivers can really enjoy.” The STI Performance Concept is a showcase for the engineering prowess and tuning capability of STI, featuring the racing engine developed by STI for the BRZ Super GT racecar, suspension and chassis components and aerodynamic upgrades. Complete cars (extensive tuning by STI) and performance parts available now in Japan focus on the WRX STI, Forester and BRZ models. The Japanese domestic market uses the nomenclature “S model” as its naming for the WRX STI and uses “tS” on BRZ and Forester vehicles that have STI components, but a naming convention for any future US models has not yet been established. STI was founded as Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries’ motor sports division in 1988. In 1989, a first-generation Subaru Legacy, tuned by STI, broke the FIA-certified world speed record over 100,000 kilometers. From there, STI moved on to the World Rally Championship, winning 3 constructors championships and 3 driver championships for Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg. It currently competes in the Nurburgring 24 Hour Challenge race winning its class two times in 2011 and 2012 and also in the Super GT series with its BRZ-based Super GT. |
