Tribeca-Nachfolger 2018 - Viziv 7 Concept - heißt jetzt Ascent

When it was dropped at the end of the 2014 model year, Subaru’s Tribeca was both the oldest and least popular model in the automaker’s lineup. But given the strong demand for reasonably-priced SUVs with third-row seats, it was only a matter of time until a replacement arrived. That replacement has now been spotted in prototype form, testing alongside a Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] Explorer and Mazda CX-9. The new SUV is larger than the Tribeca and will be offered as standard with third-row seats. It’s designed around the Subaru Global platform which in shortened form debuted in the 2017 Impreza.

Look for the sole powertrain to be a version of Subaru’s familiar 3.6-liter flat-6, paired with a CVT. All-wheel drive will be standard, of course. Subaru has confirmed production will commence in 2018 at its plant in Lafayette, Indiana. The plant is where the automaker produces its Legacy, Outback and latest Impreza. What Subaru is yet to confirm is the vehicle’s name, though the automaker hints that its new SUV will wear a badge synonymous with “outdoor adventure.” One possibility is Ascent 7, which Subaru recently filed trademarks for. A debut should take place at one of the major North American auto shows in 2017, most likely April’s New York auto show.

These images give us our best look so far at the Subaru Ascent, a new-for-2018 three-row crossover to fill the hole in Subaru's product lineup since the unloved Tribeca was discontinued after 2014. This prototype is lightly coated in a body-hugging camouflage wrap and appears to take its design from the Highlander-on-steroids Viziv-7 Concept that debuted at November's Los Angeles Auto Show. An exec from Subaru's parent company said at the time that "the next three-row from Subaru will be the biggest Subaru vehicle ever." That's for sure: The wheelbase is 117.7 inches and the overall vehicle measures 204.7 inches - a bit longer than a Chevy Tahoe. Subaru may well debut the production Ascent at the New York Auto Show in April. In the meantime, check out the spy shots above.

NEW YORK - Subaru of America, Inc., which this month posted its 64th consecutive month of record-breaking sales, today made the world debut of the Subaru Ascent SUV Concept. The styling concept also confirms the name Ascent for the upcoming Subaru 3-row SUV. Both the design concept and the production Ascent will feature an all-new turbocharged direct injection boxer engine.

The exterior design of the concept follows Subaru’s “Dynamic x Solid” theme with powerful fender flares representing Subaru’s all-wheel drive system and a large, bluff grille denoting a true SUV look. The interior of the concept features a flowing dashboard design and a 7-passenger configuration with center captain’s chairs.
The Ascent production model will be based on a modified version of the Subaru Global Platform that debuted last year. The model will be built at Subaru of Indiana, Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana and will be sold exclusively in the North American market starting in 2018.

Zitat:
Hi all,

I had the distinct privilege of seeing the production (well, pre-production) Ascent as part of a focus group! Because I signed an NDA and don't want to get sued, I can't give away any details (please don't ask here or PM me)...

But I think it's OK to say in a general sense (since it has been teased by the concept) that those of you that have been wishing for an "Outback XL" will get their wish. If you take all of the best upscale features of the Outback and merge it with the interior and exterior styling direction of the new Impreza/Crosstrek and stick in a competitively sized 3rd row, that's pretty much what we're getting. This was all hinted by the concept Ascent at the NY Auto Show, and I think Subaru has done a better job translating the concept into the finished product that they have with previous concepts. That is all I dare say.

As far as the discussion here about the 8 passenger option being a surprise -- that's not actually true. I met Tom Doll last fall with a volunteer group of Subaru Ambassadors at SOA and he was openly talking about the "7 & 8 passenger crossover" that was going to be launched "in March or April 2018". I had seen other mentions of this elsewhere as well, so it wasn't a secret or a surprise.

Lastly, the final production Ascent WILL have it's world unveiling at the LA Auto Show this year. However, given that Subaru doesn't currently have a 3 row SUV and they want people to wait to buy theirs, I wouldn't be surprised if they start dropping teasers sooner rather than later. (That's my own prediction and not based on anything I heard.)

Bottom line - If you like the Pilot or Highlander or Pathfinder but want to have a Subaru look, feel, and content, you will love love love the Ascent!
