Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept previews Evo 11, debuts October 27

Mitsubishi has sent out its best sign yet of a revival of the famed Evolution badge, with plans to unveil a new e-Evolution concept at the Tokyo motor show next month.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 11, or ‘Evo XI’, has been rumoured for a few years. But since the future of the Lancer is pretty much non-existent, hype around a possible Evo 11 cooled right off. Soon, fans will get some relief thanks to a new concept.

Very little has been revealed about the concept at this stage, aside from a typical poorly-lit image showing the rear end. The concept appears to be quite racy though, with a futuristic, curling wing arrangement attached to the roof and rear guards.

Judging by the high torso and body lines, the concept will be based on an SUV or crossover of some kind. This idea has been talked about before, as Mitsubishi probably saw the increasing popularity of SUVs, giving a potential future Evo a better business case.

Does it mean there’s a new Evo 11 on the way? It could very well mean that. In a statement accompanying this teaser image, Mitsubishi said:

“A beacon for this renewed ambition will be the world premiere of an all-new flagship concept car, the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT. This very high performance automobile will blend Mitsubishi Motors’ signature 4WD and electric powertrain know-how with advanced Artificial Intelligence technology under a low slung aerodynamic SUV Coupe shape.”
All will be revealed at the Tokyo show, which opens its doors on October 27. A slightly earlier online debut is expected and we’ll be sure to keep you updated if it does.

Following the brief, bombshell announcement, Mitsubishi provided new details on the concept's battery-electric powertrain and described some of its artificial intelligence (AI) features. While Mitsubishi did not describe battery capacity or power outputs, it did say the e-Evolution Concept uses "high-torque and high-performance electric motors, supplied by a high-capacity battery system." We can assume the e-Evolution Concept will do its best to channel the sporting aura the "Evolution" name has garnered over the years.

The e-Evolution Concept will pair the high-output electric powertrain to a triple-motor four-wheel-drive system, which boasts a dual-motor active yaw control (AYC) system. A single motor powers the front wheels, while the dual-motor AYC system handles power delivery to the rear wheels, and provides electronically controlled torque vectoring. Mitsubishi says the entire power and drivetrain provides crisp handling and sporting appeal.

To enhance the driver-centric mentality, the Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept includes AI assistance to bolster the driving experience. The automaker described the system as a complementary force in the e-Evolution Concept, which will learn drivers' behaviors and coach them in vehicle performance and safe operation. Specifically, the AI system will build a "training program" for drivers to provide advice through voice dialogue and the e-Evolution's dashboard display. The AI system will also control other functions via voice activation, such as headlights and wiper blades, and it can alert the driver to various malfunctions.

In the grander scheme of things, the e-Evolution projects Mitsubishi's future design and product direction, but the brand didn't say if the concept itself previews a production vehicle. Now part of the Renault-Nissan alliance, Mitsubishi will focus on electrification. We'll have the full details on the e-Evolution Concept when it makes its debut on October 25. New Mitsubishi Lancer to be radically reborn as a crossover
Our exclusive image previews the look of the new Mitsubishi Lancer, which is set to return as a crossover and could get hybrid power

Mitsubishi is working on a radical return for the Lancer name, as a funky C-segment crossover that will rival everything from the Ford Focus to Toyota’s C-HR, Auto Express has learned.

The Japanese brand is enjoying a rapid growth in sales as part of the same Alliance that includes Renault and Nissan. Now the firm’s boss, Briton Trevor Mann, and chief designer Tsunehiro Kunimoto have started work in earnest on replacements for all of Mitsubishi’s current SUVs – and a new generation of small car and Lancer.

Speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Mann revealed that the direction of the Lancer is close to being finalised – and he also gave a strong hint of what size of vehicle will carry the badge.

“We have a long-range product plan that’s pretty solid until 2025, and a dotted line beyond that,” he explained. “Within that what we’ve said is, ‘Which vehicles do we want? What are we going to work on?’ We’re going to replace ASX, Outlander and Triton [the L200 pick-up]. Then we have these two boxes: Pajero and Lancer.

“Lancer’s probably the easiest one; we believe we’ve got a solution that could fit the segment. Because if you look globally, the C-segment hatchback [Golf and Focus] market is not shrinking. It’s down a bit in the US and Europe. But its numbers are still expanding in China. So there is appeal. And I think because the segment is so large globally, we’ve got to take a look at it.”

Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept - off-road
Kunimoto says the design direction previewed by the e-Evolution (above) that was displayed at last year’s Tokyo show is ideal for a smaller vehicle. Our main preview image shows how it could evolve into a new Lancer hatch. “Just because it’s C-segment doesn’t mean it has to be a very conventional hatchback,” the designer explained.

“Maybe we can create a new type of hatchback vehicle. We’re thinking quite radically. Originality is as much a part of the Mitsubishi design philosophy now as consistency,” Kunimoto added.

The firm is likely to base the Lancer on the latest evolution of the Alliance’s CMF C/D platform. That would support a crossover shape like the e-Evolution’s, while also offering the potential for four-wheel drive and the adoption of Mitsubishi’s hybrid systems, tech that the Alliance brands are working hard to integrate into their platforms.
